Software as a Remote Control Service (SRCS)

How many remote control devices do you have in your house ?

Let's count a typical minimalistic scenario:
- one for the old tv
- one for the new tv
- one for the old VHS
- one for the DVD
- one for the old music station
- one for the home cinema
- one for the air conditioning

Wow - that's 7 remote control units at least.

How about only one ? Why does such a simple thing don't come as a 'home-standard' in 2008 :-) ?

Moving this analogy to software-as-a-service -- and related devices.

I really like the Amazon Kindle as a toy (well - as reading from the net - they're not selling in EU yet). Sounds like a great toy.

Why isn't a good web-service enough for that kind of service ? Why are they needing a new device for this (i.e. remote control) ? Will one have one mobile phone, one pda, one laptop and one Kindle ?

Or is it for those people who can't really use a PDA/etc because it's too complicated - but find Kindle easier ? Could be.

But sounds like 'yet another remote control' -- instead of 'reusing the browsing system'.
